This review is a bit of a throwback, as I initially did it and posted during the MLB playoffs last year. Now that it’s the off-season and I’m just waiting for spring training to start, I figured this would be a good #froaigfriday to post. I received this dram from Devoz as a thank you for a bottle hook-up I did for him earlier in the year.
So, as I sit here awaiting the start of the 2016 ALCS between the Blue Jays and Indians, it’s been 23 years since since the Blue Jays won the world series, and I’m starting off with Laphroaig 23. it’s a SMWS bottling, coded 29.154, named Camping with a MAS*H, and bottled at 49.8% ABV. I’ve had and reviewed 9 Laphroaigs previously with an average score of 88.9, so fair to say I’m a fan, and here’s hoping the oldest I’ve had to date lives up to that history! 23 years in a bottle, 23 years since the last Blue Jays World Series… as they say in /r/torontobluejays, ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ BLUE JAYS TAKE MY ENERGY ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ
Laphroaig 23 – SMWS 29.154 “Camping with a MAS*H – 49.8% ABV”
- Appearance: light, typical uncoloured yellow.
- Nose: lots of oak, light sweet peat, not as in your face as I expected. Slight spiciness, cinnamon, anise. Some sea air saltiness.
- Palate: much more smoky than the nose suggested, some ashy peat, oaky vanilla, that sea air and brine is up front too. Caramel, cinnamon, dark chocolate. Iodine
- Finish: long, ashy, sweet.
- Score: 91/100
well this was certainly a fantastic dram. I hesitate to say it’s the best Laphroaig I’ve had though, but it’s close. It has all the elements you expect from a Laphroaig with the balanced oak and depth that age gives. Fantastic.
(sadly that series didn’t have as nice a finish as this whisky)
