Kavalan Solist Ex-Bourbon (KavaFan Bottling) B080828075, bottle 26/142, 55.6% ABV
- Nose: Creamy vanilla off the top, pineapple, piña colada, melon, bourbon-like caramel, short-bread, and a nice spicy oakiness.
- Taste: Vanilla pudding, really good crème brûlée, coconut, piña colada, oak, and a faint cinnamon spiciness.
- Finish: Medium/long, very good viscosity, coconut, fruit, and spicy oak notes linger.
- Thoughts: An outstanding expression! Lots of depth and complexity, great mouth-feel. The flavors are easily distinctive, with very good balance.
- Score: 93 + NA value point(s) = 93/100
But how does it compare to a standard Ex-Bourbon Solist? “Let’s find out, shall we?” – @tomodera 🙂

Kavalan Solist Ex-Bourbon, 57.8% ABV
- General thoughts: Very solid whisky. Vanilla, pineapple, melon and caramel. Musty oak and spiciness. Finish is medium/long, good viscosity.
- Score: 87.5 + NA value point(s) = 87.5/100
Head-to-Head: The KavaFan bottling has much more depth, richness, and volume. Cleaner and crisper, more complexity. The extra age (9 years vs about 6) has really done wonders to this! 9 years in Taiwan seems like 25+ in Scotland. The people who selected this cask for our group did an amazing job. Outstanding whisky!
