Nikka Taketsuru 21 Pure Malt, 43% ABV, acquired in trade.
- Nose: Apples, green grapes, floral, morning dew, soft oak, a really nice caramel coffee espresso, and a general nuttiness.
- Taste: Bitter chocolate, coffee, pipe tobacco, a faint lemon, and orange marmalade.
- Finish: Long. Chocolate espresso, slight wood smoke, malt, and orange notes linger.
- Thoughts: Really nice on the nose; a lot going on. The coffee-espresso and chocolate notes that run throughout the whisky are great. Really good complexity of flavors. The subtle smoke compliments the spirit well, however the finish falls a little short for me. The malt note doesn’t quite balance out the rest of it, otherwise a really good expression. Retail price on this bottle approaches $400 so you are expecting something that stands out. I do really like it, but if I had purchased this bottle I’d subtract a few points for value.
- Score: 87.5 + N/A value point(s) = 87.5/100

Scores:
After my initial score I add or subtract points relative on how I perceive value (based on what I paid for the bottle). A zero value means I think the price is justified.
0-69.5 – Don’t bother trying, life is too short for bad spirit.
70-79.5 – Worth trying, but you’re not missing out if you don’t.
80-84.5 – I recommend trying.
85-87.5 – Definitely try this!
88-92.5 – I recommend buying a bottle blind!
93-95.5 – Stuff you reserve for special pours!
96+ – The meaning of life.
