Glendronach Peated Port Wood, 46% ABV, $125 USD.
Limited release, finished with Douro Valley port pipes, non chilled filtered, natural colour.
- Nose: Strong raspberry and strawberry hit off the top, then damp wood, bitter oak, mild peat, and peaches.
- Taste: Tart raspberry and strawberries continue on the palate, bitter oak and charcoal.
- Finish: Medium to long. Tangy sharpness, with heavy ash and charcoal, then some mild peat.
- Thoughts: When I first opened the bottle the nose was almost unapproachable. The tangy oak note was very off-putting. I transferred out a few ounces into a sample bottle to allow for more air. This helped a lot. I’ve noticed some Glendronach’s really need time to open up in the bottle. After 3-4 weeks the whisky improved a great deal. It’s got great mouth feel. The palate and finish are really good, but I don’t like the oak notes, especially on the nose. It throws off the balance from the rest of the malt. I was so excited to purchase this bottle, peated-port is right in my wheel-house. I paid secondary prices but obviously overpaid. It happens sometimes…
- Score: 82 – 2.5 value point(s) = 79.5/100
