High End Vintages

Back in the day, we did a higher end event every year, but that fell to the wayside a bit during COVID. we’ve revisited this old favourite with a line-up of bottles all 20+ years old.

First off was a Braeval / Braes of Glenlivet 32yr old from Murray McDavid finished in Margaux casks. Delicious palate opener and very refined spirit!

Second was another Murray McDavid, a 28yr Fettercairn finished in a combination of oloroso/PX sherry. Some great earth and mineral notes, plus dried fruit and leather.

Third was a Speymalt Macallan 21yr from 2002. An absolutely gorgeous bottle that reminded many of older Macallan bottlings from earlier decades. We bemoaned what the OBs do to their spirit these days.

Fourth was a sulphury, funky Mortlach 23yr aged in first fill sherry from Gordon & MacPhail that was polarizing – some loved it and its unique profile, others were a little turned off by it.

Finally we ended with a 25yr G&M bottling of Caol Ila also aged in first fill sherry, which was universally loved by the group. A gorgeous peaty, fruity ending to a great event!

This theme is sure to be a popular repeat once again – don’t think we’ll get away with skipping it ever again!
