TWS’s Holiday Gift Guide / Best Whiskies under $100 at the LCBO

We don’t know if it’s general inflation or just increased demand (spoiler: it’s inflation), but it seems that every time you turn around, the price of whisky has increased. It’s remarkable how many bottles, including ones well loved and formerly reasonably priced, have become priced out of the “every day” category. Since the holidays are fast approaching, at a recent TWS event, we asked the … Continue reading TWS’s Holiday Gift Guide / Best Whiskies under $100 at the LCBO

[Review] Amrut Spectrum 004 (2021 Release)

This is the most recent batch of Amrut Spectrum, bottled in 2021. I’m extremely excited to try this whisky – Amrut is one of my favourite distilleries (without any “not located in Scotland” qualifier!), and the original Spectrum from 2015 remains one of my top whiskies of all time. Confusingly, both that release and this new one are numbered “004”, as are a number of … Continue reading [Review] Amrut Spectrum 004 (2021 Release)

Battle of India Tasting: Amrut vs Paul John

In September 2021 we had a very fun event we called the ‘Battle of India’ where we pitted the two big single malt producers from India against one another: Amrut and Paul John. We had 3 pairs of spirits that were similar in nature to one another from each distillery, and one mystery dram at the end. Each pair was tasted blind and members guessed … Continue reading Battle of India Tasting: Amrut vs Paul John

Amrut Triple Review: Rye, Double Cask and Virgin Oak Single Cask

I was dropping off a few mystery drams for devoz to add to a shipment for j4ni back in December so my wife and I came by to hang out for a drink or two. He had recently acquired a couple new Amruts and was gracious enough to share them with me, so I took a couple of notes. sparse notes because we were socializing … Continue reading Amrut Triple Review: Rye, Double Cask and Virgin Oak Single Cask

Review: Amrut Virgin Oak (Kensington Wine Market Exclusive)

Appearance: 1.8, Old Oak Nose: Caramel, chocolate, grainy, malty, menthol, rich oak, leather, ginger, pepper steak, almost some red stone fruits here too. Normally with Amrut single casks, you get mostly the core Amrut profile with an accent of the cask type, not so here. The Amrut profile is there, but it is dominated by a rich spice and sweetness. This is not an out … Continue reading Review: Amrut Virgin Oak (Kensington Wine Market Exclusive)

Review: Amrut Intermediate Sherry & Amrut Spectrum

Amrut Intermediate Sherry Appearance: 1.5, Auburn Nose: Typical Amrut grainy creaminess up front, lemon custard with a touch of zest, some red stone fruits. The sherry is certainly present, but is not dominating the nose. Taste: Great mouth feel, creamy and thick, the Amrut distillery character is at the forefront, lovely grainy creaminess, some tart red fruit, cranberries, some raspberry, touch of lime, some white pepper … Continue reading Review: Amrut Intermediate Sherry & Amrut Spectrum
