Liberty Pole Spirits: Bassett Town Rye Whiskey (white dog)

When we launched the Toronto Whisky Society, one of the goals was to try new whiskies and provide honest, unbiased feedback on them. Our members have been doing this for quite a while now on Reddit, with over 2000 reviews posted collectively on the network. We soon found that distilleries are eager to get word out about their products and that our group is a … Continue reading Liberty Pole Spirits: Bassett Town Rye Whiskey (white dog)

Review: Battle of the Benriach 22 Single Casks! (Rum and Port)

Benriach 22 Cadenhead’s Rum Cask 1992 Appearance: 0.2, Pale Straw Nose: Rich barley sugar and cereal notes, some licorice, menthol, under-ripe pears. A bit flat in terms of depth and body. Taste: Quite malty and grainy, there is definitely a note of bitter molasses, hint of ash, orange blossom honey, vanilla and icing sugar, very faint spearmint note. Finish: Somewhat thin, the ash comes out … Continue reading Review: Battle of the Benriach 22 Single Casks! (Rum and Port)

Review: Amrut Virgin Oak (Kensington Wine Market Exclusive)

Appearance: 1.8, Old Oak Nose: Caramel, chocolate, grainy, malty, menthol, rich oak, leather, ginger, pepper steak, almost some red stone fruits here too. Normally with Amrut single casks, you get mostly the core Amrut profile with an accent of the cask type, not so here. The Amrut profile is there, but it is dominated by a rich spice and sweetness. This is not an out … Continue reading Review: Amrut Virgin Oak (Kensington Wine Market Exclusive)

Review: Bunnahabhain 12 vs 18

Thank you to fellow TWS member WDMC905 for these samples. I’ve had both previously and enjoyed them but at a very early point in my scotch exploration, such that I didn’t really have the skills yet to put words to thoughts/tastes. Very happy to have samples of two Islays gems to review side by side! Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old Abv: 46.3% Colour: Deep Copper Nose: Rancio, … Continue reading Review: Bunnahabhain 12 vs 18

O’Begley [Distillery Tasting & Review]

And to finish my birthday bender on craft spirits we visited O’Begley’s Distillery. An interesting place, the storefront was originally used to sell Ice Cream. And now it sells something a little bit nicer. Granted I’m saying that because I review whiskey and not ice cream. I guess if I want to get diabetes faster I could do both, but not for now. O’Begley’s Distillery … Continue reading O’Begley [Distillery Tasting & Review]

Finger Lakes Distilling [Distillery Tasting & Review]

Visited Craft Distilleries on my Birthday weekend this year. I did reviews of them. They are the future, IMHO. We’re all good? Great. Oh, and it was in Western New York. I walked into Finger Lakes Distilling with much happiness and joy. It was a busy, busy place. Spirits were laid out. There were even ex-bourbon barrel chunks to be bought. Newspapers that were laminated … Continue reading Finger Lakes Distilling [Distillery Tasting & Review]

Myer Farm Distillery [Distillery Visit & Review]

TL;DR other posts – I went to a bunch of craft distilleries for my birthday. It was a great time. Much booze and wine and beer was drank. I did reviews on the distilleries. You sat there and achieved less with your life. Now that that’s out of the way, we can move onto our next distillery: Myer Farms Distillery Situated in the Finger Lakes … Continue reading Myer Farm Distillery [Distillery Visit & Review]

Black Button Distilling [Distillery Tasting & Review]

For those of you who didn’t read the last distillery review, here’s a quick version: Craft Distillers interest me, I think they are the future, it’s my birthday, we went on vacation, I drank at them and reviewed them. Our next stop for distilleries (that had whiskey ready to review) was Black Button Distilling. Located in Rochester, Black Button Distilling is located in an old … Continue reading Black Button Distilling [Distillery Tasting & Review]

Review – Aberlour A’Bunadh Batch #06

Aberlour A’Bunadh Batch #06 // 59.9% ABV // $100 CDN Found this beauty just sitting on the LCBO shelf a few days before Christmas 2015, hesitated on pulling the trigger for a few days but eventually came to my senses and snagged it up. I am going on the assumption that because it was bottled in 1999, and these bottles are typically min 10 years … Continue reading Review – Aberlour A’Bunadh Batch #06

Review: Scotch Malt Whisky Society 30.91

SMWS Code: 30.91 Code Name: “Deliciously dark and sweet” Distillery: Glenrothes Age: 18 years Cask: Refill Ex-Sherry Gorda Appearance: 1.1, Burnished Nose: Rum raisin ice cream, Christmas fruit cake, spent matches, ginger snaps, masala chai, plum pudding. What an odd nose. Am I detecting sulfur? For some reason, the sulfur is not overt here, or it’s blending weirdly with the other notes… Taste: Is this … Continue reading Review: Scotch Malt Whisky Society 30.91

Toronto Whisky Society goes to#WhiskyHeelParty2016

Just got back from #WhiskyHeelParty2016 hosted by Mark Bylok of http://www.whsky.buzz fame (also, he wrote the Whisky Cabinet), and thought I’d post some pictures of the night. Basically, once a year he brings a bunch of whisky aficionados together for a massive party (I counted 25 people in the room at one point), who all bring their ‘heels’ or bottles with a bit left in … Continue reading Toronto Whisky Society goes to#WhiskyHeelParty2016
